Fill in the Blank Generator · Last updated 6 October 2026
Fill in the Blank Generator is a Chrome extension that turns a text into a worksheet with gaps and an answer key. There is no account and no sign-up, it shows no ads, and we never sell or share your data.
What stays on your device
- The text you highlight on a page, paste or type, and the worksheets you make from it. A sheet in progress is kept in your browser for the tab you are working in and is gone when you close the browser.
- Your settings: the look of the sheet, the export format and the last choices in the Generate form. They are saved in your browser’s own extension storage.
What is sent to our server, and why
Only when you use one of these features, and only what the feature needs:
- Photo and Screenshot the page: the image, so the text on it can be read and returned to your panel.
- Use your phone: the photo you take on your phone. The text read from it waits on the server for up to 10 minutes until your panel picks it up, and is deleted as soon as it is picked up.
- Generate: what you ask for — the grammar point or words, level, age group, kind of text, topic and length — so a text can be written.
- Choice and Word formation exercises: the sentences that hold the gaps, so answer options and word roots can be found.
- Find an article: the topic you type and your browser’s language. Our server looks the topic up (not with AI) on Simple English Wikipedia, English Wikipedia, Wikijunior, Wikinews, Wikivoyage, News in Levels and Global Voices; if you type it in another language, it first asks the Wikipedia in that language for the English title. Results for a topic are cached for up to 12 hours, without your install number or address. If our server can’t be reached, your browser asks Simple English Wikipedia directly.
Fair-use limit and counts
- The extension creates a random install number. It is sent with the requests above and is used only for two things: a daily fair-use limit — the server adds up the cost of that number’s AI requests for the day and keeps the sum for up to 2 days — and a daily count of how many different installs used the server, for which the server marks the number as seen that day, also for up to 2 days.
- The server keeps daily totals — how many requests of each kind and what they cost, and how many different installs used it — without any content, install numbers or addresses, to see how the service is used. These daily totals are kept for up to 400 days.
- Cloudflare sees your IP address to deliver a request and limits how many requests one address can send in a few seconds. To stop abuse, the server keeps a one-way fingerprint of the address — it cannot be turned back into the address — with that day’s usage, for up to 2 days. The address itself is not stored.
What the extension can see
The extension works only on the tab where you click its icon, and only after you click it: it has no permission to read all websites. On that page it reads only what you highlight, or the whole page when you click Whole page, or a picture of what you see when you click Screenshot the page. It does not collect your browsing history.
Permissions, and what each is for:
activeTabandscripting— to work on the tab where you clicked the icon: the marker, Whole page and Screenshot the page.sidePanel— to open the extension next to the page.storage— to keep your sheet in progress and your settings in your browser.- Optional access to
newsinlevels.com,learningenglish.voanews.com,simple.wikipedia.org,en.wikipedia.org,en.wikibooks.org,en.wikinews.org,en.wikivoyage.organdglobalvoices.org— asked only when you first use Find an article, so the marker can start on those sites by itself.
Usage counts
The extension sends anonymous counts of which features are used — for example, "a sheet was downloaded as PDF" — to Google Analytics, under a random number, not your name or email. Your texts, photos and worksheets are never sent there. The extension does not read other websites or your browsing history and does not follow you across websites.
This random number is not the install number used for the fair-use limit, and the two are never linked. What is counted: installs, opening the panel, downloads (format, where the text came from, exercise type, number of levels), searches for an article (whether one was found and on which site — never the topic), your star rating, and AI features that did not work.
Our web pages
The welcome page, the page after removal and the feedback page count visits with Umami: no cookies, and no IP address is stored — only the page, the kind of browser and the country. If you write to us on the page after removal or on the feedback page, your answer goes to our Google Form, so write only what you want us to read.
When you remove the extension, the address of the page that opens carries a rough count of the worksheets you made — 0, 1, 2–5 or 6 and more — so we can see whether people leave before or after their first sheet. Nothing else about you is in the address.
Chrome Web Store policy
The use of information by Fill in the Blank Generator complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Changes and contact
If what the extension does with data changes, this page will change first, with a new date at the top. Questions: hello@fanarlabs.com.
